 What a cracking bottle of wine: subtle but strong; quiet yet it makes it's presence felt; restrained with an air of grace. This wine has a certain lazy arrogance about it which knows it's good without having to try. It's the cool, quirky kid at school who all admired but nobody could live up to. I matched this against a Marlborough SB (a very good one) tonight and this quietly and comfortably put the new world upstart back in it's box. A restrained nose which didn't need to show off with loads fruit, but made up for it with that classic flinty, smoky and enticing nose. On the palate it offered citrus fruit and cut grass but with a sharpness of nettle which was reflected in it's green colour. In addition there was a big dose of minerals which left a long, complex finish which just grips and grips to the cheeks. Opened this by mistake as I meant to pull out a Gewetz to go with the jambalaya for dinner but this coped fine, did nicely with the slice of Christmas cake for pud as well! Dry and fruity flavour with bags of citrus and a hint of oak in the long finish, sure 2011 wasn't a great year but this is still a cracking wine. Not as sophisticated as some vintages of PF but still a good, if far too drinkable wine! David T. Warmed up a little and it really opens up. Lemon and pear drops on the nose and the palate, with a long, long finish. A really, really good wine and worth every penny of the Angel price Adrian S. Reading previous reviews the nose seemed to be less pronounced that some but I got a lovely hint of sour pears vaguely reminiscent of pear drops. The wine itself seemed very nicely balanced, with a hint of lemon and apple for me. I'd be very hard pressed to choose between this and the Sancerre, both very enjoyable. Tania B. A touch of acidity to even out the dryness - not the extreme dry flintiness of the Sancerre, but a light exotic fruity nose with a decent follow through. Serve to impress, serve to enjoy. I am looking forward to doing the same this year and have started with the petite SB. this is not as restrained and subtle as the Paris Simoneau i drank a couple of weeks ago with grass and nettles providing a touch of bitterness to compensate the abundance of gooseberries and tropical fruit. Had this with roast chicken and cous cous and it was perfect. I really must learn to articulate flavours better, because this wine has loads of flavour and deserves much more than "lemony" Gerald F. What struck me then was the incredible mouthfeel. So luxuriously viscous. Wonderful stuff. "I decided to try this head to head with it's sister Sancerre over a king crab feast last night. I'll start by saying that they are very similar and if I'd been served them one after another I'd probably struggle to find much difference. Head to head though the nose on the Pouilly Fume is stronger on the fruit with the Sancerre's minerals coming through more. In the mouth and the difference on the nose is accentuated. The Fume more zing with the Sancerre being more subtle. The winner? Difficult to say. If you tend to go for a NZ Sav Blanc you'd probably prefer the Fume. Quite mild at just 12.5% abv the wine tastes of melon and that sweet and sharp hit that you get from fresh pineapple. Tried with some wonderful smoked salmon, onion, a mid-life crisis orangey/green pepper, pasta, parmesan, green pesto with lemon zest and juice it worked its magic. Yum! Barry W.
