I often find New Zealand Sauvignons overly cloying but here the exotic fruit flavours still felt fresh. Thu Jun 28 18:42:15 UTC 2012 at a friends house Small and Small Sylvia's Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2011 I actually found the Reserve more integrated, open and ready to drink than the regular S and S 2011 sauv. blanc. The nose marked it out as a super wine, rich and tropical and the flavour is slightly sweeter/riper and harmonious and the minerals and complexity show more. The acidity is there, but the richness carries the wine along. I drunk the wine over 3 days and by the end it was soft and more gooseberry-like with citrus flavours too. After a large plate of white fish it was perfect. There was a remarkable aspect to this wine, too: Without thinking, I took up the recently emptied galss and smelled it. What I got was spicey, peppery, herbal and exotic. It's many years since I previously came across that smell, but (dare I say it) it was unmistakably of strong, pungent, raw cannabis resin! What I do know is that we are never without at least a few bottles of all of them. Until now, that is. We've just finished our last bottle of Sylvia's Reserve and that means it's time to stock up again. OK, we like pretty much all the New World Sav Blancs we've tried (and there are a few on my "to do" list) but we always come back to NZ for our favourites. You'll notice I'm keeping French wines out of the equation. That's because I think they are totally different wines even if they do come from the same grape. If you like a "full on, in your face" fruit forward, flavour packed, refreshing beast of a wine, this is for you. It's all starts with an amazing powerful nose packed full of citrus fruits and herbaceous aroma. Grapefruit, limes, apple maybe, nettles, grass and a whole load more. That power continues into the mouth where the flavours are joined by loads of tropical fruit as well. It just fills your mouth with a kaleidoscope of flavour .... OK, poor analogy, but you get the idea. Then there's a massive finish that seems to just linger and linger. We had this with a smoked mackerel and shrimp salad with baked spud. A great match, even if I do say so myself! So I'm stocking up with this on again, but, just for the record, I'll also be sneaking in a few of Mike's and Rod's wines as well. Gerald F. This Reserve is indeed a very special wine and I can understand why it is named after Sylvia. Taste wise it's not too dry, has just a hint of sweetness in it, but beware the 14%... I'm feeling VERY happy now. The Sauvignon Blanc is absolutely packed with citrusy zinginess, there were so many great flavours running riot in my mouth that I had trouble remembering them all. The nose is huge, full of citrus fruit (classic gooseberry with grapefruit also) and some grassy tones. On the palate it is on the drier side for a sauvignon but it doesn't need need high sugar concentration as the massive fruit bursts give it so much flavour and intensity. In short this is a sauvignon that is full of flavour, very aromatic but remains crisp and refreshingly dry. Oh dear.... Herself agreed with the analysis. On to the tasting and it was INTENSE gooseberry flavour. And I loved it. There is acid and there are gooseberries and it is concentrated. I thought I'd had this wine before, but maybe it wasn't the Sylvia Reserve variant. If you like "mild" inoffensive white wines, this isn't one. Its full -on and a flavour I thought I hated. This is named after your baby but the wine is very grown up. The same flavours are there, but there is much more body to it and it manages to keep a crisp but very well balanced acidity. As I poured this and got the first hit of the aromas I couldn't help smiling in anticipation. First taste and that smile is going to stay there all night. The 2010 Sylvia Reserve was sublime, this surpasses it. It must have been a great summer in Marlborough. As others have said, this is just bursting with fresh fruity flavours, yet still has great depth and roundness - it's silky smooth both on the tongue and in the mouth. Fri Nov 11 06:26:20 UTC 2011 at a friends house After trying a new vintage of a favorite wine I like to look up my old reviews to see how they compare. This was my review from a couple of years ago. "Let me start by saying that I'm not a fan of NZ SB's. I find them usually too acidic and 'in your face' and prefer a more subtle Loire SB. Therefore when my Sister-in-law served me a glass of this at the weekend my hopes weren't that high. How wrong was I. A fantastic nose of fresh red apples and a hint of Gooseberry. A full fruity mouthful of fresh cut red apples and pink grapefruit wonderfully balanced, not too acidic and a nice long finish. 5* a definite re-order and a whole new avenue of wine opened. Thanks Smalls!" Although I am now more of a fan of NZ SB thanks to some of the wonderful offerings we've had from Naked over the last couple of years, I stand by my original review.
