Packed full of pineapples, grapefruit and lime both on the nose and in the mouth and a beautiful acidic bite making you want another sip or another bottle instantly. I was about disappointed we had to share this as I would if happily drank the whole lot myself. I preferred this to the lay of the land by just hairs breath but only just as I found there to be a bit more refinement and depth. The 2012 vintage is here, and it is definitely more welcomed than the brash and basically pointless "Beaujolais Nouveau". That is not to say that trying a new vintage is without - trepidation, je ne sais quoi? In Oz, they would probably retort "no worries, Bruce!", and Bill and Claudia would demurely suggest that they had good fruit to work with and have worked hard to present a wine that without them being proud if, would not be on my glass" - or then again, "no worries" - perhaps ;-) It looks the part, and it certainly smells the part, when you take a hooterful of it's delicious aroma. What does a modest 12.5% abv Marlborough SB smell like? Grapefruit, zesty, gooseberry fruits, greeeen! I'll forgo the cat's pee if you don't mind as that just do this wine justice... Sure it has acidity, sure it has punch, but the nose does not recoil but rather invites another test! Noo, say the taste-buds, you have had your chance; it is our moment to shine! And this wine does shine too. It has a sharpness granted, an acidity that is designed to cut through food - like our medley of fish/shellfish with it's mashed potato and cheesy crusted top served with another medley of greens in the form of a salad with dressing... Really sharp, crisp & refreshing but dont serve it too cold or you'll miss out on some of these flavours & trust me, you don't want to do that! I'm giving it a well earned 4 out of 5 but you've got full marks from my Mum. She only drinks Sauvignon and can not get enough of Small & Small. I will have to revisit the Sylvia's reserve and am keen to try the Riesling on my next order which I hope and suspect will be even more suited to my tastes. Anonymous Mon Feb 27 18:02:48 UTC 2012 I don't recognise the wine described on site, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. This is a wine of contradictions, clearly sauvignon blanc, but not typically so, tasting more of lemons than gooseberry. It seems a bit closed (and therefore thin,) yet it is a big wine, fat and oily. There is just the merest hint of "fizz" which turns the lemons into sherbet lemons! The wine has depth and dimension, yet appears a little flabby, but, instead of presenting this as the last flavour, it finishes fruity and aggresive. I've had the bottle(s) for about 2 months; my initial thought is that it would have benefited from 3 or 4 years in bottle and that I'd love to try one in 7! I'm not at all a sauvignon drinker, so the fact that I have so much to say about this wine suggests to me that, not only do I find myself liking it, but that it is a very good wine indeed, Without wanting to seem presumptuous, I'd love to have Mr. and Mrs, Small's feedback, here. PS I've only got through a quarter of my first bottle, so I have the next couple of days development in the friodge to anticipate! David B. So how does the 2012 compare? It's BETTER!! Wow, what a stunner. Just everything you'd expect in a Marlborough SB but this time, Bill & Claudia seem to have waved a magic wand and made it smoother and more velvety somehow. And the best bit is that we still have 7 bottles left! So is this the best SB that Naked sell? Maybe, maybe not. There is so much choice. But if I had to go onto a dessert island, I'd struggle to choose between this and Mike's Lay of the Land. Or maybe Virgile's Sav. Or maybe....... Problem is, we haven't tried them all yet. Tue Dec 20 19:54:56 UTC 2011 at a friends house I have been put-off Oz / NZ whites for a while since I found many supermarket (sorry!) brands a bit tasteless - although pleasantly refreshing. This Sauvignon Blanc is different though - as you can tell from the nose, this wine has a lot of fruit flavour packed in. Very pleasant to drink - you can really appreciate the fruitiness without the wine being sweet. It remains dry and crisp despite the slight punch packed by the taste - a neat balancing act. As a side note… This wine was supposed be served with dinner, but, because it was the first bottle of our first Naked Wine order, my wife wanted to 'sample' it while I was preparing the food.
