Mon Jun 25 20:38:34 UTC 2012 at a friends house Every now and again, I find a wine that evokes memories. This one reminds me camping holidays in the Loire Valley. It took me back to lazy summer afternoons on the campsite in Saumur sitting outside the caravan with a plateful of French cheeses and a bottle of crisp white wine. OK, it's not one of the full on Marlboroughs (which I love), but this is a stunner. It has all the characteristics of Sav Blanc. A good nose of gooseberry, cut grass and something floral that I couldn't identify. On the palate those initial aromas have to do battle with zingy citrus flavours - grapefruit and lime I think. all this is followed a crisp refreshing and lengthy citrus finish. This wine is simply labelled - "wine of France Sauvignon Blanc". No fancy appellations, no "Grand" or "Premier" Cruz. It's a fantastic example of what good, honest, uncomplicated French wine can be. I was lucky enough to taste the Villebois range at Prowein in Dusseldorf recently and this is their entry level wine! As you work your way through the range, they just get better and better, culminating in the fantastic Pouilly Fume. If you are looking for a "house white", this should be on your list, but that seems to be almost demeaning this wine. As long as this wine is in stock, I'll have a few in my rack. Gerald F. I don't know if it's something about 2012 but this is the second Loire sauvignon blanc I've had in a couple of weeks that has been more fruity & tropical than previous vintages of the same wine. Is it vintage related Joost? This is a staple wine in our house & I was very pleased when it came into stock & ordered within days! To get the most from it I tend not to drink straight from the fridge & let it warm a couple of degrees to show itself well. The wine itself has a nose of pineapple & melon with a hint of wet grass. In the mouth it's crisp with light citrus & sour apple rolling around the tongue. The finish has a soft creamy texture which balances out the citrus elements very well. This is a great introduction to the Villebois range which become more elegant & complex the deeper your prepared to put your hand in your pocket (the prestige is fantastic). The palate then appears in complex waves, a bit of acidity then some citrussy, flinty fruit with a little bit of grass which finishes with a huge burst of mouthwatering acidity and granny smith crispness. This is an excellent complex, refreshing sauvignon. Perfect for enjoying on the first day of summer sunshine that we're enjoying today. Graeme T. The grape has been cultivated around Bordeaux city since the eighteenth Century. The name is derived from ’savage’ thus meaning wild white. From Bordeaux this variety was brought to the Loire Valley and being cultivated in the Sancerre area and neighboring vineyards. illebois sauvignon blanc comes from carefully selected mature vineyards. The vines have developed root system that spreads thru the layers of flint and clay to reach the limestone (tuffeau) structure. The vineyards are trained carefully for the vines to express their full potential. The yields are carefully controlled under the AOC regulations. An expert mix between modern techniques and traditional vinification guarantees a crisp, elegant, and fresh fruited Loire benchmark sauvignon blanc. Steve G. I guess I prefer SB's from NZ - this wine wasn't as dry and didn't have enough of the classic gooseberry taste. A middle of the road old world wine, IMHO. I'd drink another glass if you poured it for me, but wouldn't rush out to buy a second bottle. Robert F. With the global saturation of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc's, it's difficult to come across one that blows you away. Whilst drinking on it's own, it's not the most palatable; but, with some spicy fish cakes it actually balanced really well. At this point I would be uncertain whether I'd buy it again. Great value for money, I'm definitely going to reorder Emma H. Lovely crisp dry sauvignon blanc. Not an 8.99 wine but great as part of the introductory case. Simon M. one of my favourite Naked Wines. Could drink it by the bucket--load. I love how clean it tastes, and how much fruit there is locked up in it. Love the fact that it has the complexity and depth of flavour of a good red, with the refreshing nature of an exceptional white. Just love it, generally! Pauline G. Sat Oct 22 07:05:59 UTC 2011 I enjoyed drinking this straight from the fridge and feeling the wine develop with every mouthful. Light, refreshing and dangerously drinkable when chilled. Citrus fruit aromas begin to develop as the wine warms up and the taste becomes sharper and pleasantly fruity with hints of lemon, grapefruit and gooseberry. Towards the bottom of the glass the nose has become more tropical and the citrus flavours take on a more acidic note which is almost too strong but in fact strangely moreish....time to top up again. It's at it's best somewhere between chilled and 5 minutes later but on a hot summers day it's so perfectly drinkable you'd be lucky if there's any left by then. Although Villebois produce Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, this Petit Villebois  is one of their cheaper wines and is released under the Vin de Pays du Val de Loire banner. It's got the classic pale straw colour that you would expect along with a rounded mouth feel, nice acidity and a long finish.
