 Was really looking forward to opening this wine as I have just been reintroduced to Carmenere. The Malbec of Chile! It does need to breath but sadly I think I built it up too much! May need to be drunk a little but older as the alcohol is very prevalent and although there are tannins present they are not dominant so could mellows into a gorgeous smooth red. Dark chocolate on the nose and deep red winters flavours with spices. Would try it again and be a bit less excitable and more patient with the next. . Susan C. To the palate blackberry and strawberry maybe a little oak then a rather heavy layer of tannins and a very slight bitterness, somewhere in there is a sweet vanilla note followed by spice and pepper, rather long in tannins that hang around like an unwelcome guest. david c. Wed Jul 18 19:40:57 UTC 2012 I have to own up to being a bit of a "newbie" to Chilean reds and Carmenere in particular. Also, being a bit of a wine bookworm at the moment I had to read up about the grape and found that it was formerly a Bordeaux variety but was abandoned after the Phylloxerra outbreak in Europe. It was only a matter of time before I turned my attention to Chile and I did get a bit of encouragement to try this wine in particular from Paul Downing. Well, actually, Paul has been nagging me for ages to try it as it's favourite wine on the site - anything for a bit of peace! :-) We did the usual aerate/decant exercise a few hours before drinking and were rewarded with a delightful, almost garnet and very leggy wine in the glass. This wine seemed to me to have a very busy nose. Loads of black fruit - blackberry, blackcurrant - and also a big hit of spice - sweet vanilla and black pepper in particular. There is also something "earthy" going on. All of those aromas continue into the mouth where they are joined by liquorice, coffee and something 'leathery". I found the alcohol to be a bit confusing. On occasions (particularly the first glass or so) there did seem to be a bit of an alcohol "burn", but as I worked my way through the bottle, this seemed to reduce and the wine became more balanced. Also, towards the end of the bottle, the wine seemed to mellow considerably and become more "fruit forward" - maybe that's the Merlot coming through. Overall, a really nice wine. Take a sniff, and there is enough fruit to count for one of your five-a-day just by inhaling. Blackcurrant, some blackberry, some black cherry blend together with some plummy fruit, and then there is everything else going on - lovely spice, some tobacco leaf, and I think I can also detect some cedarwood too (the best way I can describe this is when you inhale the smell whilst a chunk of wood - cedar in this instance - is being sawn...) as there is a bit of sweetness coming through too. There is some of the Merlot greenness but it just adds to the enjoyment. It also has a very nice and rewardingly long finish. Naked Wines said I wouldn't like this, and they were right, I'm always on for trying something new though, especially a new grape as I've never had Carmenere before, blended or on its own. Even after a good day's breathing, I found this rather tannic. The nose was enticing enough when first poured, with a lovely fruity blackcurrant aroma, but this quickly disappeared to nothing. Taste was more nothing followed by a bitter aftertaste. Sorry, lots of people love this it seems, but it's not for me, it does make me wonder if I had a duff one. And it's not just sour grapes (if you pardon the pun); the Arabella Merlot that NW also believe will be on my "hate list" is a winner. Now, jow do you score on the new system? I said i was not going to again, but just have. After the first cider fest of the year returned home to do ratted cooking. First of all slipped into something comfortable, my George Michael tee shirt and shorts. Some might say the shorts were a little on the snug side and restricted my moves to Whams bad boys and others but at least i could hit the high notes. Next raided the fridge for something to cook, came up with a paella of sorts, smoked chorizo, mushrooms, garlic, tomatoes, peppers and rice, paprika and herbs. Plus the remnants of a bottle of Blue Nun that someone brought round as a joke. The Kimbao Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere 2010 was calling to me. Cracked one open whilst prepping the food and moving gently to Whams club fantastic megamix. this little beauty combines Cabernet and Carmenere and at 14% is as the blurb states Ribena for grown ups. Blackcurrent is the predominant fruit flavour. The tannins have refined and produce a smooth, but dry finish to this wine. Can’t wait for the new Carmenere to hit the Naked site Malcolm D.
