We drank this last night with chicken and mushrooms in a creamy sauce and it matched the food very well. It has a lovely honeyed floral taste with a nice fresh acidity but very little fruit and it's certainly moved into that drink now stage of ageing as it's still drinking very nicely but feels as though it will soon fade. I did read that this wine is recommended to be drunk up to 4 years from vintage so that would sound about right. I love tasting wines as they move through the ageing process and would have loved to have tasted this one when it was younger as it sounds as though it was quite different. Francesca J. Sun Apr 14 09:32:31 UTC 2013 Shared with friends who dropped in for 5 minutes, and stayed for four hours - carving a trail through my guarded hoard! Yes, we enjoyed it. Can I describe the experience? Sadly no, but we did like it! Cindy P. Sat Apr 13 15:14:28 UTC 2013 First thing to report, I also had a cork that crumbled on opening. If this is a sign that the corks are beginning to dry out then perhaps these bottles shouldn't be kept for too much longer? Thankfully there was one section of the cork which was still fully sealing the bottle neck so the wine wasn't spoiled. Once decanted via a sieve to catch the last of the cork, the first couple of sips were all about power, so much so that this dominated everything else of the taste and mouthfeel. But from then on it was into its stride and the power subsided and it left a beautifully smooth, balanced wine with loads of dark fruits and liquorice. My only quibble is that the flavour lacked a little depth. Ultimately I could have just referred you Nicolas or Leon's reviews below (except the 'back door action' bit perhaps, which I'll pass over I think). This wine isn't the monster that the name (and perhaps its country of origin) might have you believe. It's much more refined than that Adrian S. Sat Apr 13 09:30:02 UTC 2013 Possibly the most highly recommended wine on Naked? I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed by this. I liked it but by no means did I love it. Very earthy, for me it was just a bit too leafy tasting. Edited Review - Tried another bottle of this at the weekend. The musty, leafy taste that spoiled the first bottle nowhere to be seen, the last one must have been on the turn. After an hour or so in the decanter this was a smoky and refined delight. Everything working in perfect harmony, smoky nose, depth of fruit, balanced tannins, toasty oak,and a savoury finish. A truly class act. Based on my previous experience and some of the other recent reviews it may be time to drink up on this one. Anonymous Mon Apr 15 09:53:14 UTC 2013 Richard M. Sat Mar 02 08:37:45 UTC 2013 Silky smooth in the mouth, huge black cherry and dark fruits liquorice flavours, slips down nice and easy. Thanks for the tip guys jenny w. Sat Apr 27 18:06:29 UTC 2013 OK I'm reviewing this to celebrate the second bottle we opened which I am really enjoying, (Sadly the first bottle was not right and lovely Naked Wines have kindly sorted a refund for that already). So am pleasantly surprised to find this white - it's big flavours, dry but with fruit, hard to describe really - do you know what I'm considering reversing my decision about whether to buy this again... Sophie C. Wed Jan 16 21:51:51 UTC 2013 There were whispers and recommendations from those who know about this wine and they were right. Powerful and complex, this is a wine for grown ups. I have nothing more to add and would instead signpost you to other people's reviews. I picked up a load of this last month and am looking forward to drinking this again and again. An easy 5 stars. theodore b. Tue Apr 09 15:01:36 UTC 2013 D H. Wed Nov 07 20:53:40 UTC 2012 at a friends house Donkey punching red! Red Rick W. Mon Sep 17 20:40:45 UTC 2012 at a friends house bought 2 - loved them - bought 4 more - 2 are off (corked) and 2 are good but taste slightly different to each other! How do I get a refund on the 2 corked ones when I reviewed the first purchase and dont get the option again to say they are faulty? John C. Thu Sep 06 18:34:21 UTC 2012 In my opinion, this wine is a classic example of why we should buy wines based on recommendation. Some might argue that it might be a case of the "emperor"s new clothes", but that's certainly not the case with this wine. I was determined to give this wine the respect I'm told it deserves, so it was decanted and aerated many hours before drinking. A clear pale ruby colour at the rim that extends inwards towards an opaque core suggesting it's age. It has legs that slowly slide down the glass like the a reluctant virgin slowly removing her silk stockings. An amazing sight. A clean but very complex nose of medium intensity of gently spiced dark fruits and vanilla with just a hint of sweet toffee and an almost earthy aroma. A concentrated feel and taste of the palate. Dark fruit, spice and a hint of chocolate. There is a hint of sweetness to this wine that seems to be in perfect balance with the acids and ripe (very ripe) tannins. The tannins seem to caress the gums with a sort of erotic fruity dryness that you want to lick off to get just a bit more of that delightful fruity, chocolatey flavour. A long fruity and spicy finish leaving a warming glow that seems to slide oh so gently down the throat. After a bottle of this amazing wine, you just have to feel as though you a lying in bed smoking a post coital cigarette. Seems I'll just have to take the dog out and have a crafty fag. Not quite the same, I know. We had this with one of the most amazing steaks we have ever eaten. If anyone reading this live in Essex, there's a farm shop on the road between Braintree and Witham (in Cressing). The best meat we have ever bought. The steaks were reluctantly passed over the heat of a 40 watt bulb and served with baked spuds and roast vegetables (sweet onions, Shikake mushrooms and sweet peppers). A match made in heaven. Yes, we loved this wine, but I didn't post the review before I'd ordered another case. Can only give this 5 hearts because this is the maximum. What a shame this is not made by one of Naked's "established" winemakers. Gerald F. Sun Feb 24 20:14:44 UTC 2013 A full on wine, with sweet burnt rubber and tar, that will last for years Mike H. Mon Jun 04 19:56:59 UTC 2012 Lovely & fruity Mike G. Fri May 18 12:41:30 UTC 2012 at Excellent straight out of the bottle when a bit cold, this wine had promise. And it delivered well after resting & opening up! Deliciously fresh red berry fruity, with plenty of chocolate, this wine packs a heavy (friendly) punch. Glyn E. Wed May 02 16:45:20 UTC 2012 Fantastic Bargin on the NW deal. Nice and smooth but with a bite at the end. Looking forward to the next bottles. Philip R. Sun Apr 29 18:57:13 UTC 2012 at a friends house Just the way I love it!! Was not too dry nor was it too sweet. Savoured every glass I had!!! veroeska c. Mon Apr 23 07:13:31 UTC 2012 very nice but very strong! julie w. Wed Apr 18 17:00:03 UTC 2012 I was going to keep this longer but I've given in as it's Friday night! Opened, double decanted & left for 10 hours before tasting results in... A deep purple colour with a slightly thin rim & shorter legs than I was expecting given its 14% alcohol. On the nose I agree with Nathan, it's quite italian in nature with restrained liquorice & a thyme like herbiness. The taste is also quite old world in that it's got delicate fruit (I think cherries & plums maybe?) with soft but lengthy tannin & pepper in the finish. Again I agree with Nathan, if you told me this was a £12 Cotes du Rhone I'd agree with you, I certainly think it will change over time as those tannins develop & I'll be trying a bottle on my usual 6 monthly timescale to see. Good? yes very but still a bit young. Monster? Only if you're referring to Sully from the film, big, soft & quite cuddly! Cheers! Geoff F. Charles D. A very nice wine, complex yet very drinkable. Very happy Paul R. Fri Mar 30 18:36:58 UTC 2012 Awesome!!!! ian R. Sat Mar 24 20:47:54 UTC 2012 at a friends house N B. Thu Mar 15 18:23:12 UTC 2012 at a friends house Welcome back Monster 05 Have not had this for a while but I am mightily glad it's back in stock and that I picked up a few bottles. The nose offered dark fruits, cedar, peppery notes and a some delicious vanilla and burnt toffee. The nose tells you the oak is perfectly aligned with the fruit and it will be far from over powering. All of the above followed beautifully onto the palate with a tannic structure that gives depth, long legs and a finish which is smoother than Cary Grant in a velvet tuxedo . This wine offers the magic three in abundance... balance, complexity and concentration and is surely one of the best wines naked has offered to date..? matthew w. Thu Feb 21 23:30:03 UTC 2013 Needs another couple of years in the bottle. Not a patch on the 05. Nathan M. Tue Aug 28 16:12:10 UTC 2012 at a friends house Not quite the same size monster as the Cape Monster Red, but very enjoyable nonetheless. First impressions were definitely black-cherry related and the alcohol was noticeable. Sadly there is no cork to give the game away as to what it really is :-) dave w. Fri Mar 29 18:48:44 UTC 2013 My ideal red, smooth and powerful drinkable on its own or with food. Stuart T. Mon Jan 09 21:18:28 UTC 2012 at a friends house An absolute delight, big meaty and powerful. Roy L. Sun Jan 08 19:23:17 UTC 2012 at a friends house Love this Sauvie/Viognier blend. It sounds wrong but it works so well! Eamon F. Sat Aug 25 20:19:54 UTC 2012 at a friends house Very nice, I didn't really give it much air (other than the trademarked "Naked Shake"), but I fancied something to wash down my Chorizo and Chicken stew, so figured why not go for a punchy SA Pinotage to stand up to the strong flavours of the stew. It more than held it's own with the food and now, sitting here finishing the glass after the food's gone, it has a wonderfully smokey back note, rich red fruits and a slight savoury finish. It's just a notch below the best Pinotage on the site (all hail Manley Wines!), but I'd happily drink it again! Darren L. Thu Feb 07 18:08:55 UTC 2013 Great dark fruit flavours from a top producer. Check cork. Very smooth. Great as a winter warmer on a Friday night at home. Matt S. Tue Nov 29 20:38:01 UTC 2011 at Naked Wines Mmmm... very nice... a match for the previous Cape Monster offerings... except that I forgot that wines like this might throw a bit of sediment, and poured the last bit too fast! I have no doubt that I shall be reordering this one... Alan R. Fri Jun 15 21:06:17 UTC 2012 at a friends house Flag this wine as duplicate
