 Developed very nicely in the glass after an hour or so. A more elegant Rhone style Shiraz than blockbuster Barossa style I guess because of the addition of the Viognier. Tue Oct 23 09:47:23 UTC 2012 This is not my favourite because I think it is too alcoholic. At 14.5% it just gets in the way. I remember a potentially delicious Kimbao pinot noir missing the mark, for me, simply because it had a 15% alcohol count. If they could have held this Arabella at 14% I think it could have been spot on. Anyway, the first night the wine was a little restrained and tannic and came across a bit like a bordeaux, with a gout de terroir, rotty nose and a better balance. By the second day, an enticing blackberry nose had developed and the flavour was a lot more open, though a bit of heat had crept in via the alcohol. It was oily and had good layers of ripe fruit, however, with good length and it might be a wine for a thick steak with a pile of onions/shallots and garlic fried in butter and good olive oil. The fact that I'm relatively critical of this wine and yet I didn't mind it and gave him a 50% score tells you all you need to know about the Naked range. (In case you think I'm just a little sycophant, I'd better add that if i did come across a rubbish naked wine, you wouldn't hear the last of it! But where is it?) David B. OK do the blend of Shiraz and Viognier grapes can be had elsewhere too - for good reason... It works! Combine the spicy nature of the Shiraz grape with the softer dulcet fruit of the Viognier and bingo - a great marriage. This has dark dusky smokey fruits with a superb touch of oaky vanilla tones - and yes as the back label alludes there is liquorice in them there taste-buds too! Cherries, cinders and bonfire toffee aromas greet you and the fresh smooth flavours of ripe cherries, blackberries and some floral notes are backed with pepper and and a hint of spice. The Shiraz gives you typically distinct spice and pepper, but it is softened beautifully by the Viognier to make a wine that is well balanced, full of fruit and dangerously easy to drink. It's an unusual combination and for me it works. Be warned though...if, like my partner, white wines don't agree with you then the white wine viognier grapes will get you. Otherwise this is a red in appearance and drinking style. It is warm and smooth, generally harmonious with some high tannin notes. After leaving for a few hours it really improved, and those Shiraz flavours really kicked in, together with a delightful peppery and smokey aftertaste - unsurprising given its South African heritage. However, the second glass seemed to lose these a little. Sadly, we only had one bottle; I'm suspecting that this is a wine that would benefit from being forgotten about for a year or so and given time to develop. It then needs a good few hours breathing properly before drinking. And having said all that, if you're an Angel you can't really go wrong at this price! Graham A. i very tasty wine Simon R. It is very fruity, but with excellent balance. Lovely. Michael P. Kicks off with a lovely floral aroma carrying a faint gunpowder scent, I spent nearly as much time smelling this wine as I did drinking it which got a few funny looks from the Wife. It needs half an hour or so out of the bottle to develop but once it does the rewards are rich. Dark, spicy fruits give way to coffee and dark chocolate flavours and the high alcohol content lends a good wallop. It’s a big, surly brute of a wine which I thoroughly enjoyed and can only recommend. Steven B. The delicious taste of berries just makes it instantly likable even for people who are not fans of red.
