I made a big pot of my legendary Bolognese ( well in my mind anyway) and whilst it was slowly cooking soaking up all that oozy goodness of far too many garlic cloves and possibly a whole bottle of wine. I went to find a bottle to slurp whilst eating this cornucopia of tongue tingling tomato and herb delight. Whilst trying to find a bottle in the dark (another story for later gentle folks) I grabbed the first bottle I fell over. Was its Gods pointy finger that made me trip over this bottle, well after all his son was a master of wine. Anybody that can turn water into wine deserves to be worshipped in my eyes. Anyway after a good cuss I returned with said bottle, I was going to have red with the spag bol, but it had seemed to disappeared whilst cooking into my not inconsiderable tum tum.. So the bottle in question was one of Stephen de Wet’s Arabella Chenin Blanc 2012. Not had this vintage before, but it brought a smile to my face when I returned to the light. Good job I did not “turn to the dark side Luke”. I am wandering, returning to the wine, it was fairly cool around 12C-/13%C, but I popped it into the fridge for a few minutes whilst I dished my triumph. I cracked the stelvin and poured a glass and quickly swallowed a glass full of this nectar, well it was hot in the kitchen with all that steam. I paused; this was not what I remembered of previous vintages. I had to look at the label again. Yep Arabella 2012. Well slap me gently and call me Shirley. The nose was gently reminding me halcyon days of yore before the rains came, fresh mown grass and wonderfully citrus notes danced seductively up the nostrils. On the now eager to sup again tongue a slight spritz give up to a slightly off dry and slightly sweeter taste than I would have thought of a Chenin. No bad thing as the creamy lemon hit the taste buds in the side of the cheeks. I was drinking solo and that bottle was finished off only 3 minutes after the last of the Bol sauce was licked off the plate. A bargain sub £7 Chenin. Served not over chilled, no need to let breath for too long as the flavours are fresh as a daisy( well many looking at my lawn) straight upon opening. So in conclusion, nice one Steven. I would doff my cap to you if I had one to doff. And as for the culinary disaster, ah another time another story, suffice to say it involves stains. Malcolm D. A crisp, refreshing wine, it has a nice bite of acidity. Sampled as an aperitif it works well, as it would do with a variety of chicken meals like chicken chasseur, or a creamy pasta dish - as it also has a buttery mouthfeel. Very nice! Barry W. Nice zesty core of bright acidity, some notes of banana and vanilla on the mid-palate, and a brief herbaceous, refreshing finish. Nothing to get excited about, but a perfectly presentable wine for informal occasions. Ricard G. Those of you who saw my recent review of the Arabella Sauvignon Blanc might remember my "home economics" experiment. Well this wine supports my findings. We've had 3 white Arabellas over 4 nights nights white drinking and there's still some left in the bottle! I read somewhere recently that South Africa has a bit of a reputation for knocking out cheap, mass produced Chenin Blanc. Thankfully, I discovered SA CB before I was aware of that "fact", so I'm pleased to say my opinions have not been jaundiced. In the glass, this wine seems to have an amazing sparkle to it - it's a crystal clear pale lemon colour. A fragrant nose. We found cut grass, grapefruit, apple and a hint of steely minerality. We found the first sip a bit "tart". But that was our fault. It had come straight from the fridge and I'd suggest that this wine is best enjoyed when it has warmed up a bit. We then found that more gentle peach and hints of tropical fruit seemed to mellow the citric acidity and brought the wine into much better balance. The finish is refreshingly acidic with a preserved lemon flavour. A dry wine that, at a blind tasting, I don't think I'd have identified as a Chenin Blanc. I might have guessed it to be a Chablis. That's my confession for the day! Anyway, this is a delightful wine. Packed full of flavour and oh so very easy to drink. We had it with a seafood pasta dish and it worked a treat. As with all the Arabella range, this represents great value for money and just proves that you don't have to spend a fortune to get a decent bottle of wine. I'm not a great white wine drinker as will be apparent to anybody reading my other reviews, but on the first warm Saturday night this year, it went down a treat with some roast cod cooked by my better half. Quite dry with a bit of zing and fruit, it's my number two of the three Arabella whites; the Viognier still wins by a long way. 3.5/5 Alastair L. This is the 1st white from Arabella's mixed case that I've tried, as I love their selection of reds. Sadly, it didn't do anything or me. Too acidic and metallic for my liking. This is the boring school teacher who makes you dread maths and fail. This wine has nothing to say to me. It's pale and soft and gentle and in that much is not unpleasant in the mouth, and it's lack of viscosity gives it also a not horrid mouth feel, but regrettably for me everything about this wine is NOT. It does not have a great nose, perhaps its all too subtle, it does not have juicy and tantalising top notes, not citrus, not herb, and it does not have any satisfying depth to give it measure alongside any food.
